Hi everyone!
Grace's recounting of her trip to the "Emergency Room"
"We had a big adventure recently. I was helping my mom make cucumber salad with the food processor and I accidentally put my fingers in!! I don't know why I did that. My fingers were bleeding a lot. My mom ran over to me, grabbed me, washed my fingers, and then held my fingers 'firmly'- that means tightly- with a wash cloth. It hurt me. Emma screamed!! Taylor screamed too!! Mom said we had to go to the embassy. Taylor called Sarayo, she is our Tajik doctor, and told her that we were coming. Mom drove and Taylor held my hand. Jeff, our new FSHP (Foreign Service Health Professional) had just arrived last week to Dushanbe. He checked my fingers. He had been an Army medic. He was super calm and he gently washed my finger. Jeff and Sarayo made me a big bandage and gave me gummy bears. Both of my finger nails are gone and a small part of my fingers, but thankfully, I didn't cut off any bones. I just watched a movie and rested when I got home. I am very proud that I am the only Roberts kid to have to go in to the doctor for an emergency! I won't show you a picture of my injury, just the bandage.....it's getting better everyday. I am thankful that God protected my fingers from being cut off. " Grace
Here is a slightly edited email that I sent to a friend a few days after the tragedy. =) Emma
AAAAAAH!!!!! WE ARE EXPERIENCING SOME MAJOR FINGER INJURIES IN THIS HOUSE!!!!! Okay. So A few days ago Ben was downstairs watching one of the "big boys" use the treadmill. I shall explain why we have a treadmill later. So anyways.. He was watching, got a little too interested, wanted to touch that "super cool thing that moves really fast." Not at good scenario....at all. So....he touches and finds to his great dismay and pain that it is not a super cool thing to touch. He ripped of a ton of skin from his fingers on his left hand and was screaming for a long time. I am serious it was like...an hour of straight screaming. Not good. He has been recovering and is doing okay even though he still has to wear band-aids and be careful what he does with his hand... Okay... so we were all well recovered from that scare when today, as we are preparing for a major-ly big event thing Mom is hosting for all the important peoples here.... I am putting potatoes in the oven, Taylor is washing more potatoes, Grace is putting cucumbers into the food processor for Mom, and Mom is heading out the door. Just then we hear this horrid scream of agony and as my head whips around to see what is going on I see Grace standing on the chair next to the oven, blood everywhere, the food processor running. Needless to say when Mom heard the screams she turned right around and came running to the kitchen. As I yell "MOM!!!! GRACE CUT HER FINGERS ON THAT....THING!!!" in response to her question of "WHAT HAPPENED?????" Taylor comes running over from the sink and switches off the machine as fast as lightening. Yelling at me to get band-aids, she grabs a towel and Mom grabs her baby, Grace that is. I dash up the stairs to get band-aids and come panting back to the kitchen to find Mom holding a kicking and screaming Grace's hand in a washcloth, already soaked in red blood. I ran upstairs to get some gauze at the order of Taylor and come back finding Mom getting a peek at the horrifyingly injured hand. She pronounces it "Not too bad" but she has an alarmed look in her eye. She says we must take her to the Embassy nurse at once, and she and Taylor fly off with Grace to the car. I stayed at home to clean up all the fresh blood that spattered the floor. Now, you must understand that this took only a few moments, and seemed less. It was almost dream-like. Dad came back from a day trip while they were gone, smiling with the success of his trip. I immediately informed him of the tragic thing that had befallen us, and he, startled, phoned Mom. She was on the way home, Grace still in agonizing pain. On the two fingers that had been injured, the fingernails were off, the tips of her fingers gone, and the skin just barely not cut away from the bone. Grace is running around with a piece of gauze and tape around her two fingers. Oh goodness gracious me, I tell you we were all so frightened! It was horrific. Something you only see in nightmares or movies...

Emma and Grace
