photos Feb 16, 2011

I have attached a few photos to give you an idea of our time in Dushanbe thus far.  There are many more coming......
Dulles Airport Jan 9, 2011
Munich Airport

playing at the Istanbul airport

our house address

the girls on the roof rescuing a ball
Navroos took the boys and I to "Sultoni Kabeer" (phonetically spelled), an outdoor Home Depot and we successfully purchased the materials we needed to build a rabbit hutch!  That was an adventure...
constructing the rabbit hutch

Pippin in the kitchen enjoying breakfast

a snowy morning - the snow melts each day

bread truck making a delivery to the local store

the house across the street on a snowy morning

the view from our attic on a rainy day
I purchased this "Kazan", which I think means big pot....these are some typical meals that Tanya has taught us to make.  We have really enjoyed everything she has made for us so far.  What a treat to have a great cook making meals for you twice a week.

Plove - a typical Central Asian meal
it is made of carrots, onions, meat, rice

radish salad

tomato and cucumber salad

Navroos's mother and sisters make samboosa for sale
this is the room they work in everyday

Samboosa - meat filled pastries

Ben eating Samboosa
A kazan of borscht-yummy

We love this bread called Kleb in Russian
the kids take turns going to the bakery for lunch and dinner for a fresh loaf
the water distiller in our kitchen - it heats the water to kill bacteria, parasites, etc...
but does not remove any metals or pollutants - I will never take clean water
for granted again.....

Navrooz - Tanya's husband is a taxi driver and has been so kind in
helping us get around the city and escorting us while we are out

I am taking a photo from outside the store
it is about the size of one mini-mart isle

our store - you ask for the items you want to purchase-
there is still a lot of pointing on my part!!!

Abdulo and Hushvakt our local store keepers
(names spelled phonetically)
they are very patient with our emerging Russian

"Bread for Sale"
the bread oven - the dough is slapped inside on the wall to bake

one of the beautiful bread ladies

Our neighbor girls!

"Coal for Sale"

Any time there is something for sale or  service provided there is a sample placed out in the street - there are many "shops" run out of homes

The alley where the kids play
Our walk home from the store

  2. We love-love-love the blog!!! Thank you so much for doing it. I plan on checking it every day, and asking questions....so get ready.
Question 1. What kind of money do you use there?
Question 2. Do the neighborhood kids go to school?
Question 3. Does Pippin get to come inside, and did you decide to litter box train him?

I would take pictures of what's happening here, but it is still just all white with snow :(

    Love you guys,
Lance, Jill, Maddyn, Sully, and Ellie
